The New Clay

Commonly referred to as the “Polymer Clay Bible”, this was the first book published on the subject of polymer clay. Because it has been around for so long, the comparisons of the different brands is rather out-dated, but everything else remains as useful today as it was the day it was published. This is not a project book with step-by-step instructions leading to specific finished objects. Instead, it presents information about many of the ways polymer clay is used—everything from the basic tools you’ll need to a variety of techniques. Chapters on color and design help explain why certain combinations are pleasing to the eye. Subsequent chapters present a wealth of polymer clay information. Canework is addressed in depth, but you’ll also learn about Nan Roche’s version of opaque-clay mokume gane, interesting ways to form beads, marquetry, surface treatments, collage, vessel-making, and sculpture, among other things. While the subtitle mentions jewelry making, this information can be applied to any polymer clay project. Dense with information, bright color photos and helpful line drawings, this is essentially a reference book for polymer clay artists and hobbyists. The serious beginner will also find this a valuable resource.
